Pond Design
Well after the pond design rant on the Design Ideas page, how much more can I cover about pond design? A lot!
Let's recap:
Length and width is where you start. Walk off or use a tape measure to get your numbers.
Garden hose's help lay out ponds beautifully. That way you can free form the design.
Paint around the hose's final placement, and maybe add some flags to mark it.
Stone type.
Think of where the skimmer will be located, and where the waterfall will enter the pond.
Consider the underwater design.
The location of the pond planting areas.
The location of bridges and/or walkways.
Where key boulders will be located.
So the above are some basics. Let me rant for a few sentences about some pond design possibilities.
What if the pond will have gold fish, or Koi, or turtles, or an alligator, or a school of hammerhead sharks, or no fish, or it is a swim pond?
What if there was a negative edge, and no skimmer?
Will the pond be concrete or liner based? Will
polyurea
be used?
What if the pond is "lake sized"?
So we've got the basic length x width standard pond size approach. What about irregularly shaped ponds? How about multiple pond's within a design?
How about ponds that flow under your house that you can see your fish from inside your house via glass?
What about the use of exotic stones such as Utah ice, or green boulders and Mexican pebbles, or all slate?
There is always your formal ponds to consider.
Japanese themed??
Ponds that are designed way out of the box that are usually unique and one of a kind. (There are people that make ponds from bathtubs, add Volkswagons to the design, add old boats that appear to be sunk, etc, etc, etc.)
Did anyone say Islands? You can have your very own, right in your backyard.
How about no waterfalls in the pond, and there's a fountain instead?
The way the web is, and social media, it is very easy to scour the internet for ideas. You just have to figure out who is going to build it, and what is your budget?
Here is a great hint for you if you want to get really creative, and scour the internet for ideas. Use
